In the Red & Brown Water

“In the Red and Brown Water” is a play set in the modern day Louisiana Projects, yet steeped in the traditions of the Yorùbá Religion. Each character represents one of the Orishas, or deities, of the Yorùbá tribe. With that in mind, each character’s design is heavily influenced by the colors and symbolism of their Orisha. In addition to this, The Yorùbá people were highly influential in the development of African Batik, so it became an important pattern for me to include in many of the character’s designs. Using toned down colors, to give them a slightly worn look, helps to keep the characters grounded in the post-natural disaster world we have created for them.

Phantom!

Thursday, November 27th, 2014

PHANTOM! is a comedy based on the novel “Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux. For this project, the Masquerade scene was selected to be the area of focus. Each character is based on a specific idea, for the Red Death, the Phantom wears a red smoking jacket, with the edging featuring the words from the cape in the book. Raoul is designed after 70s Glam Rock. and finally, Christine is wearing a costume inspired by “the Angel of Music”
